this machine creates the so-called roping effect: the hems are not folded but rolled, creating a skew which results in diagonal fading effect after wash and wear. this is a detail that can be found on vintage jeans as well.

union special 43200g machines are not produced anymore as big jeans manufacturers prefer the quicker, but non-appealing folded hem with on a regular single stitch machine. this makes it a very rare sewing machine nowadays.
